In order to promote Facebook and stress the significance of the values of friendship, Paul Butler decided to create Facebook map. It is designed to draw connection between people from different locations through social media platform such as Facebook.
Another reason for creating this map was to measure different boundaries such as geographical and political. As part of the test, Paul began various techniques connecting cities using the volume of Facebook’s friendship. He decided to use heavy lines and arcs. Combining these basic dots and connections, he was able to draw a detailed map of the globe showing continents and the international borders. Above anything else, Paul said that the drawn lines do not represent coastal lines or political boarders instead a human chain of relationship.
Facebook has been considered as the most popular social media platform which invaded the online businesses from all across the world. The visible lines are believed to cross different continents such as the Asia, Europe and the US. These nations were hit by fluorescent clusters leading to a giant hole. This allegedly represents what they referred to as “great firewall”. Some users commented that it implies the limitations set within China in using global media platforms such as Facebook.
There were only few local social networks that are visible in China like Kaixin001, Renren, Xiaonei which dominate the market. Instead of using the Facebook, most of them use the MSN Messenger and Tencent’s QQ chat. Through this, they were able to conclude that the Great firewall is blocking the lines that connect to Facebook. The absence of China in the world’s famous networking site is not considered as a major problem according to the Chinese community. It is unnoticed because there are still some Chinese microbloggers like Jo Ling Kent and Wang Xiaojie of CNN’s Beijing bureau found out that they were able to manipulate the Chinese web. Because of this, they don’t find it a problem being not able to connect to Facebook.
There was one savvy netizen, who was able to identify another reason for the absence of China in the Facebook map – it is because Chinese internet users are using VPN server which can attract internet restrictions, they appear as users in most foreign cities. So even if they use Facebook in China they will still remain unseen in the friendship map.
Through a discussion forum online, the efforts of Mr. Mark Zuckerberg – the CEO of Facebook was seen in China. He mentioned that it was one of his precious vacations but apparently led him doing some little rounds in the city and was able to meet the country’s top Internet companies. CEO Mark Zuckerberg met Robin Li- who is the founder of the dominant search engine in China. He was toured in Baidu headquarters and was spotted at the Sina.com (leading website in China) office. During this tour, the employees of Sina.com were seen taking their pictures with the Facebook CEO and posting them online; through this they see themselves close to the Internet Master.
